Corruption fueling poverty in Malawi-Chinsinga

A corrupt tendency by politicians is the main catalyst for Malawi’s poor showing, in terms of development and economic gains, political analysts observe.

According to a 2012 integrated household survey, poverty levels continue to worsen, with the latest statistics indicating a marginal fall of 50.2%, which is about half the country’s population.

Meanwhile, the proportion of extremely poor people is said to have increased from 22% to 25 %.

Chancellor College Political Science lecturer Blessings Chinsinga told the media those leaders in all the four regimes have been at the centre of running the country’s economy, giving little room for the private sector to play its role.

The development, according to Chinsinga, has only enriched a few individuals, who have been able to land themselves lucrative contracts at the expense of the general population, thereby affecting the nation’s financial system.
