Kinnah Phiri Still Flames Coach

Beleaguered Malawi national football team coach Kinnah Phiri remains the man in-charge for the Flames, government said on Wednesday, two weeks after the Football Association of Malawi announced it had fired him.

Sports Minister Enoch Chihana said government was waiting for a clearance from the Attorney General on the way forward.

“We’re currently consulting the office of the Attorney General on the way forward on this issue,” Sports Minister Enock Chihana told Zodiak Online Wednesday.

The consultation, among other things, seeks a legal opinion to pin-point possible loopholes that may see Kinnah and others suing government for terminating their contracts before the lapse of their timeframe.

Kinnah’s contract is due to expire in June 2014.

The sports minister was however noncommittal to say whether Capitol Hill may decide to ignore the FAM decision to fire the coach.

“We are just following due process. When the Attorney General’s office gives an opinion, we will make a determination then. For now, let’s wait and see,” Chihana said.

Two weeks ago, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) recommended that the flames coach and his entire technical panel be fired following the national team’s poor performance
