Malawi President fumes over letter announcing her resignation

Malawi President Joyce Banda Saturday put up a K2 million reward for anyone who provides information identifying the author of a letter in which she purportedly announced her resignation.

The President said this during a media conference at Sanjika Palace in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre after returning from Equatorial Guinea where she went to attend the 3rd Africa-South America Summit.

“It could be a soldier or anyone with the information, you will get the money,” she said.

Banda’s comments came a day after the State House released a statement dismissing claims that the President has stepped down. The statement described the purported resignation letter as fake.

“At no time has the President explicitly or implicitly resigned as Malawi’s Head of State. The State House believes this is the work of desperate confusionists who are bent on bringing disorder in this country.

“The architects of the letter are people who cannot appreciate the peace and order currently prevailing in this country under the able leadership of Banda. They are prepared to stoop so low as to break the law just to bring about anarchy for their own selfish ends,” reads the statement, signed by press officer Lusekelo Mwanyongo.
