Nelson Mandela Death “Shocks and Shatters” Joyce Banda

Date:

During an interview on BBC Radio, Malawi President Joyce Banda had this to say about the recent death of anti-apartheid hero, Nelson Mandela, “We are all shattered and shocked. My regret at the passing of one of Africa’s greatest sons who fought against all forms of oppression is profound.”
“Nelson Mandela’s resolve, courage and devotion to the liberation of South Africa and the people of Africa against apartheid and racism will continue to be an example of strong leadership and great patriotism that has helped to bring peace and unity to this world.

“On behalf of the people of Malawi and myself, I send our deepest sympathy to our brothers and sisters in South Africa.”

It is not yet known if President Banda will make the trip to South Africa for Mandela’s funeral. Last month, her Finance Minister, Dr. Maxwell Mkwezalamba, had instituted a ban on all travels by government officials as a cost cutting measure in light of the recent Cashgate corruption scandal that has rocked Joyce Banda’s government. As a result of the cashgate scandal, some of Malawi’s donors have withheld budgetary support funds until solid progress is made in sorting out governments management of public finances.
