Former finance minister in the Bingu wa Mutharika regime applauded for turning around the economy, Goodall Gondwe, has been picked by Mutharika as his running mate, FaceofMalawi understands.
Information that has leaked from the party has indicated that Mutharika has settled for Gondwe who had once retired from active politics to join him as his deputy.
Mutharika, on Sunday, declined to name his running mate at a press briefing he held a day after returning from the US claiming he was still consulting. Mutharika said that he had eight names before him for a possible running mate position.
However, the leaks from within the party have indicated that the issue of running mate in the opposition Democratic Progressive Party is a foregone conclusion as Mutharika has settled for Gondwe.
