JB appoints Dzonzi as a commissioner of MHRC

In what has been described as a token of appreciation for his role in the Green Card saga of Peter Mutharika that saw Malawians questioning Mutharika’s allegiance to Malawi before he surrendered, President Banda has appointed Justice Link Executive Director, Justin Dzonzi, as a commissioner to the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC).

According to reports, President Banda has made the appointment today.

Dzonzi was the lawyer who was championing the argument that a green card holder is not eligible to stand for Presidency in Malawi as having the card meant owing allegation to another country.

His remarks roused trouble in the legal fraternity as there were varying points of reflection in the debate. Dzonzi appeared to have been vindicated when Mutharika turned in his green card at the American Embassy in Lilongwe but it was not for long as two working days later the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) announced that a green card holder can stand for Presidency.

A human rights watch dog that is funded by the government, MHRC appeared to be vocal at the time of Bingu wa Mutharika with John Kapito as its head but it is toothless almost.
