MEC READY TO SHIELD JB FROM ANGRY CSOS

Even though they have not come in the open with an official statement, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) have indicated they are willing and ready to not bar President Joyce Banda and her running mate, Sosten Gwengwe, from standing in the Presidential race of the May polls after some CSOs demanded that the pair be barred on the grounds that they had not adhered to the constitution by not resigning from their various public offices.

According to the member of the CSOs, President Banda should have stepped down as President while her running mate should have humbled himself and have resigned as minister. So far, Gwengwe only resigned as member of parliament for Dedza Central constituency.

However, in an update in a group that belongs to the Malawi Electoral Commission, spokesperson for the commission, Sangwani Mwafulirwa declared that the President remains one until such a time when another is sworn in into office thus putting it in light that the incumbent will have to remain as a President until a new one is sworn in.

He further updated that this is the time that almost everyone wants to be a lawyer, eventually ridiculing the activists that were taking the commission to task.

On a radio discussion yesterday, journalist Gerald Viola wondered if it were possible that MEC would crucify a sitting President.
