Joyce Banda resists conceding defeat and handing over power

Malawi’s former First Gentleman, Justice Richard Banda SC, has advised his wife Joyce Hilda Mtila Banda to concede defeat and congratulate the country’s President elect Prof Arthur Peter Mutharika, we can confidently reveal.

Richard Banda, one of the country’s former Chief Justices told his wife in a conversation in State House yesterday morning around 10am but the former Malawian President is adamant to stay on in power despite the heavy election loss.

The often silent Richard Banda has since washed his hands and let the lady, known in Malawi as ‘Mrs Know-It All’ decide on her own.

A few hours after former Gentleman’s advice, the Office of President and Cabinet also sent a formal communication to Mrs Banda that from all the ballots counted and announced by the country’s major media houses and international and for the sake of peace, she must concede and offer a congratulatory message to Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika as Malawi’s next Head of State.

All these pieces of advice have fallen on deaf ears of Mrs Joyce Hilda Mtila Banda.

Meanwhile, a very prominent international diplomat has told us the by refusing to hand over power to a legitimately elected President of the Republic of Malawi 48 hours after results were known, the former President of Malawi and her associates are committing treason offense.

The diplomat said, “If we are to use the measurements President Banda used to charge for the now collapsed treason case against the incoming President Peter Mutharika and other former government officials after the death of late Bingu Wa Mutharika, then they are also committing treason and once the new President is sworn-in, they must be prosecuted forthwith.”

The diplomat appealed to the Malawi Police Inspector General of Police Loti Dzonzi and the Army Commander Henry Odillo to immediately go and provide security to the President elect, Prof. Peter Mutharika.

The diplomat said anything falling short of recognizing a legitimately elected President, is treason.

The diplomat said, Mrs Joyce Banda, the Army Commander Henry Odillo, Police Inspector General Loti Dzonzi, the MEC Chairperson Maxson Mbendera and other MEC officials are committing treason and must be held responsible for their actions.
