A 21-year-old Mother, Enet Chirwa, has been sentenced to 4 years in prison with hard labour for dumping a 1 year old child at a rest house in Mangochi.
Chirwa, who is a sex worker reportedly, dumped her own child in a locked room of a rest house at Chiponde trading centre in the district.
The court was told that the child only came to rescue after 2 days when the watchman at the inn heard him crying and forced the door open.
Chirwa pleaded guilty before the court but begged for pardon saying she had drunk beer and forgot of the innocent child in the room.
But in his ruling, the first magistrate Paison Mwanyari, slapped the young mother with 4 year jail and wondered how one can be drunk for days without getting memory.
The convict hails from Chiphamba Village in the area of Traditional Authority Nankumba in the district.
