FIRE THAT GUTTED MEC WAREHOUSE IS A NORMAL INCIDENT -MEC COMMISSION

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has said the commission is treating the fire that gutted the body’s warehouse in Lilongwe Yesterday night, destroying the disputed votes for Lilongwe City South East Constituencies as normal incident.

This has been disclosed in a Press Statement issued to Media today.

The fire according to MEC spokesperson MEC Chief Elections Officer Willie Kalonga, started at around 24.00hrs on July 14, 2014. Although the Lilongwe City Assembly was called in immediately to put off the fire, there has been extensive damage to the property and material in the warehouse.

MEC says it is working in conjunction with relevant authorities is to establish the cause of the fire and the nation will be informed in due course.

The warehouse contained about 1,500 ballot boxes, gas cylinders, gas lamps, generators, furniture and stationery. The cost of the materials damaged is yet to be established.
