Three people who were arrested for illegal possession of fire arms in Lilongwe last week on 15 August, are now facing charges of armed robbery.
Lilongwe police spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula said the suspects have now been linked to a K5 million armed robbery at a certain Church.
The suspects, Maziko Maseya, 27, Kennedy Mituka, 26 (son of a former senior Malawi Defense Force officer), and 25-year-old Francis Charles Dambuwa have since been transferred to Maula prison Monday.
According to Dandaula, police have acquired information suggesting that the vehicle the trio were using on August 15 was also used when armed robbers attacked a Jehova’s Witness Church in Area 33.
“The police have received complaints from that church and the same vehicle is being mentioned,” Dandaula said.
When the trio were arrested Friday, police confiscated machetes and fire arms from the vehicle the suspects were using and it has transpired that one of the firearms was unlicensed property belonging to one of the suspect’s father.
The vehicle also contained masks and some jackets which police suspect were being used during criminal activities.
The three suspects currently on remand at Maula Central Prison are expected to appear in court Thursday on charges of armed robbery.
