GOVT THREATENS TO CLOSE DOWN FUEL SERVICES STATIONS SELLING FUEL AT OLD PRICES

The government of Malawi through Ministry of Information,Tourism and Culture has threaten to close down any Service Station in the country that will be selling fuel at the old price.

This was disclosed in a Press Statement issued on Thursday afternoon signed by Kondwani Nankhumwa.

Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) announced the reduction in fuel pump price on Wednesday.

Although MERA announced new prices of fuel, certain service stations were still sticking the old prices.

“Malawi Government has noted with regret, that following Fuel Permit Price Reduction on 3rd September 2014, some Fuel Service Stations are still selling at old prices. This is illegal as it contravenes Section 36 (1) of Liquid Fuels and Gas (Production and Supply) Act, and Section 30 of Energy Regulation Act, all which empower the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) to direct the adjustment of fuel prices”, reads part of the statement.

Through the statement, the government has requested all service stations in the country to adjust their fuel pump prices.

“Any Service Station contravening this directive will be closed forthwith and subsequent legal action will take its course in accordance with Section 2 of Liquid Fuels and Gas (Production and Supply) Act, which imposes a fine of MK50 million plus imprisonment to ten years”, continue to read the statement.

Meanwhile the Government as urged members of the general public to report any Fuel Service Station that has not reduced prices as directed on the following numbers: 0 888 838 151, 01 774 103, 01 775 810 and 01 774 135.
