In the on going campaign to rid the country of illegal immigrants and also cramp down on rising insecurity, the past few days police officers and Malawi Defence Force soldiers have been conducting sweeping exercise in targeted locations in various districts across the country.
However, some police officers took matters too far in Chinsapo yesterday when they beat to death a 17 year old boy whose crime was mainly not running away from the police officers when he saw them coming.
The deceased was a chips seller at Chinsapo. When he saw the officers coming, he did not run away for fear that his chips business would be compromised if he did so. The police took this as arrogance and began beating the young boy and then ate his chips while stumping on him with their boots.
When the boy could not move, the police immediately rushed him to Kamuzu Central Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His burial is today.
Residents of Chinsapo are very furious with this development and have since promised to seek answers from the authorities.
