WE WILL NOT INTERFERE IN THE ARREST OF CASHGATE SUSPECT -GOVT

The Malawi Government through Minister of Information Tourism and Culture Kondwani Nankhumwa has said government will not in any way interfere with the prosecution of the cashgate cases.

Nankhumwa said in a statement issued on Wednesday, saying the ongoing arrests in the cashgate are not political witch hunt by the government.

“The arrests that are currently being effected by law enforcing agencies have nothing to do with political witch hunting but rather a pursuit of justice for the infamous cashgate and other related money laundering offences,” he said.

The Minister also urged courts to act with speed in handling the cashgate cases because Malawians are eager to know the truth about the plundering of their resources.

Nankhumwa further asked all people involved in the infamous cashgate to come out and surrender themselves to the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) or the court or police.

Within this week ACB has managed to arrest about five people namely; former budget director Paul Mphwiyo and his wife Thandizo, Assert Declaration Director Christopher Tukula, Lawyer Ishmael Chioko and People’s Party(PP) former spokesperson Hophmally Makande.
