Malawi coach confident of a win ahead of Algeria clash

Malawi national team coach Young Chimodzi is confident that his side will register a second home win when they host Algeria in a 2015 CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.

The Flames defeated Ethiopia 3-2 in their previous encounter having 2-0 to Mali away from home in their first group fixture.

“I believe in my team and give our past record against North Africa teams we should have little trouble collecting the three points at stake,” Chimodzi told the media.

“It’s a must-win game for us because we have to stay on the coattails of Algeria since they are a top side in Africa.”

Algeria top the group with six points, followed by Mali and Malawi on three points each, while Ethiopia are last with zero points.

Malawi defender James Sangala is also hopeful that they will perform well against an Algeria side which reached the last 16 at this year’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

“I have belief in the current crop of players,” Sangala said. “What is important is to use our chances and avoid making mistakes. Algeria are good at punishing you when you make a mistake.

“We have to try and concentrate in the first 15 minutes and last 15 minutes of every half.”
