MAN DIES IN ROAD ACCIDENT IN NKHATABAY

An unidentified man is reported dead while another sustained leg fracture when a lorry they were travelling in developed brake failure at Kanduli in Nkhata Bay District on Thursday afternoon.

Kanduli area has proved to be an accident spot as recently a bus overturned after it also developed brake problems.

Nkhata Bay Police spokesperson, Sergeant Ignatius Esau confirmed of the development in an interview.
According to Esau,a Scania lorry registration number NB 2300 driven by Thoko Kuyere, 36, was coming from Mzuzu heading towards Nkhata Bay.

“Upon reaching Kanduli area, the lorry developed brake failure as it was descending Kanduli slope and it hit a mango tree on the extreme nearside.

“The lorry carried 600 planks of timber with six passengers on top of the planks and when the lorry hit the tree, the planks and six passengers were flown out of the cruising lorry,” Sergeant Esau explained.

He said one male unknown passenger died on the spot due to head injuries and another passenger sustained fractured left leg and is being treated at Mzuzu Central Hospital.

“The other four passengers, driver and his assistant escaped unhurt,” Esau said.
