Police in Ntcheu have launched a manhunt for a conman who ripped off 40 bags of rice meant for vulnerable groups in Ntcheu via social networking site Facebook.
Ntcheu Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Hastings Chigalu speaking in an interview with FaceofMalawi said the incident occurred Saturday after the conman trading as Madalitso Banda on Lets Do Business on facebook tricked a San Bwanali 27 of Mwalero Village T/A Msamala Balaka, a trader and who also acts as a middle man for rice farmers in Machinga that he would buy all their merchandise.
Chigalu said both the conman and middle man firstly met on face book and agreed to buy the merchandise on behalf of United Pentecostal Church.
He said the two then met in Blantyre and agreed on a price of over K1, 000, 000 for 50 bags of the commodity each weighing 50kilograms.
âThe bags of rice were meant to be distributed to vulnerable families in Ntcheu district as relief since the conman alleged that the church runs a relief agency,â said Chigalu.
So far unconfirmed reports indicate that the bags are reported to have been sent to Villa in Mozambique revealed the officer.
âCurrently, we have recovered 10 out of the 50 bags and we have taken for questioning in connection to the matter ,a 22 year old man Chinsisi Kachinya who hails from Chimwayi village in the area of Senior Chief Kwataine in Ntcheu and Ethel Maere 37 of Mpingasa village, T/A Makhuwira, Chikhwawa,â said Chigalu.
