Malawi Judiciary has appointed the Supreme Court judge Justice Andrew Nyirenda as acting chief justice following the retirement of Justice Anastanzia Msosa.

Justice Nyirenda will be taking over from justice Msosa after her resignation on the 28th February this year.


Former President Joyce Banda appointed the female Justice in 2012 following resignation of Msosa’s Predecessor Justice Lovemore Munlo. In 2013, former president Banda appointed Msosa as a phenomenal woman having made wonderful archives of successes.

In accordance with the constitutional laws of the country under Section 113, the Honorable Justice Andrew Nyirenda SC, being the most senior sitting Justice, shall perform the functions of Chief Justice until president Peter Mutharika appoints a chief justice.

An internal memo to the Judiciary heads by Registrar of the High Court, Joseph Chigona, revealed that Justice Nyirenda will be acting the position until President Peter Mutharika appoints a Chief Justice.

Chief Secretary to the Government George Mkondiwa said government is working on the succession process at the Judiciary.

Section 111 (1) of the Constitution says the Chief Justice shall be appointed by the president and confirmed by the National Assembly.
