Fracas broke out in the commercial capital Blantyre as police on Wednesday arrested 74 people in a sweeping exercise conducted in different areas as a routine exercise to maintain the cityâs order.
The exercise which was conducted in Mpemba, Chirimba Chilobwe, Mbayani and Ndirande Townships saw 74 being apprehended, eleven of which were found in possession of liquor sachets, 4 were arrested being after found possessing Indian hemp, 1 with military uniform, 16 were found touting while 10 were illegally vending and 1 was arrested due to conduct likely to cause breach of peace.
Confirming of the development in an interview Blantyre Police Public Relations Elizabeth Divala said that the operation did only target liquor sellers, but also those who have been compromising the security in the country.
âThe Malawi Police Service conducted a sweeping exercise all different parts of Blantyre. This was in conjunction with Malawi Road Traffic Department and PMF division. Many criminal suspects have been arrested. Even minibus drivers who were found exceeding were arrested,â explained Divala.
All 74 suspects will appear before Limbe Magistrate court on Friday to answer different charges.
Meanwhile she has called Malawians to report minibus drivers who exceed there minibuses and abandon their minibuses.
