Teachers in Malawi now have all the reason to smile following government decision to release money amounting to MK2.4 billion to settle for their long outstanding leave grants.

Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) General Secretary Dennis Kalekeni confirmed of the development in an interview with the Press.

“Government has released the funding and we are hopeful that soon the money will be paid in our accounts,” Kalekeni was quoted as saying.

Kalekeni also disclosed that government has promised to pay teachers their leave grants in time starting from the next fiscal year.

Two days ago, Teachers in Malawi through TUM gave government two months to settle their leave grants or face nationwide strike.

Meanwhile Teachers have called of the planned strike following the release of the money amounting to MK2.4 billion for their leave grants.
