The Nsanje Magistrate Court on Wednesday convicted and sentenced 30 year-old George Maiteni to nine years Imprisonment with Hard Labour-IHL for defiling a 6 year old girl.

Maiteni defiled the girl on March 9, 2015 at one of the flood victims’ camps in the northern part of the district.

The court heard that Maiteni committed the abominable act when the girl”s mother had gone to receive relief support, a few hundred meters away from the camp.

According to the state, the defilement was confirmed at Trinity Mission health facility, and the minor spent two days at the hospital nursing injuries sustained on her private parts.

Passing verdict, Nsanje First Grade Magistrate Anderson Masanjala stressed that defilement cases were grave in nature, hence the need for the country’s courts to impose meaningful punishments.

“The convict deserved a stiffer punishment to deter would be offenders as the district is experiencing rampant defilement cases. Stiffer punishment can help the country make progress in dealing with such criminal activities,” ordered Magistrate Masanjala.

He then slapped Maiteni with a nine-year jail term.

George Maiteni hails from Kanting’inda village in the area of Chief Mlolo, Nsanje district.
