Police in Kasungu over the weekend arrested a 46 year old man for being found in possession of 34 bags of Cannabis Sativa locally called Chamba weighing approximately 1700 kilogrammes.
Kasungu Police Officer âin-Charge, Senior Assistant Commissioner Sekani Tembo confirmed of the development in an interview with the Press.
The suspect, Symon Phiri, was arrested on 18th April (Saturday) at around 9 p.m. after a tip off from the general public.
“Minutes later, after police invasion of the scene at Mekembambo Village, TA Chisinga, we discovered 34 bags of the illegal herb inside his house. Phiri was arrested right away” explained Commissioner Tembo.
According to the O.C, Symon has been charged with possession of Chamba. The 46 year-old Phiri is to appear before the Kasungu First Grade Magistrate Court tomorrow to answer charges which attract a maximum sentence of 9 years IHL.
Tembo told the Press that the Chamba would be burnt to ashes after court ruling. The suspect hails from Mekembambo village in the area of STA Chisinga, Kasungu.
