Police in Chikwawa have arrested a 28 year old man identified as Clement Mvula for an alleged hit and run incident that occurred in the evening hours of May 15, 2015 at Dzumila Community Secondary School along Nchalo/ Chikwawa road.
Confirming of the development with FaceofMalawi, Chikwawa Police Station Traffic Officer, Sergeant Tonny Malimusi said the suspect on May 15, 2015 hit a peddle cyclist Enock Benjami aged 40 from Mwalusha Village in Traditional Authority Makhwira, Chikwawa district who died on the spot.
Mvula is said to have been driving in a Toyotal Hilux double Cubin registration number BR 2498 which belongs to Afrox Malawi Limited.
‚ÄúThe driver is said to have been on a high speed and he hit the peddle cyclist who was in front of him going the same direction of Chikwawa. The cyclist died on the spot due to severe head multiple injuries and multiple fractures.
The driver then deserted from the scene leaving the deceased unattended. It was then due to community response and communication he was caught at Thabwa roadblock,‚ÄĚ said Malimusi.
Mvula hails from Chikwete village in Traditional Authority, Chulu, Kasungu district is soon expected to appear in court whether to plead guilty or not guilty where three charges have been mounted on him which are; causing death by reckless driving which is contrary to section 126 of the Road Traffic Act (RTA), failing to report road accident and render assistance to the victim/deceased and speeding.
Malimusi urged all drivers to make sure that their vehicles are in good condition whenever they are travelling down to Chikwawa and they should avoid overloading or sitting capacity at the same time he called upon community members to take a leading role in informing the police of any incident for a rapid response.
