Opposition People’s Party (PP) Second Vice President for the Northern region Harry Mkandawire has resigned from his position but he still remains a member of the Party.

The development comes barely days after reports emerged that there is confusion in the Party on how to run it as its found President Dr. Joyce Banda is out of the country.

Banda left the country just after the May 20 tripartite election.

Breaking the news during media briefing held in Mzuzu on Friday, Mkandawire said he has resigned from his position to disassociate himself from the rumours that the Party is directly connected to the looting of public at Capitol Hill dubbed Cashgate.

Mkandawire also attributed his resignation to the continued disappearance of the Party President who is abroad, saying he has tried to force Banda to come back home and defend herself from the rumours that she is main beneficiary of Cashgate scandal.

Mkandawire also sited lack of the Party’s commitment to have a postmortem of what went wrong during the May 20, 2014 tripartite election for it to perform poorly.

PP came third in the election with the then Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika emerging victorious.

Many people linked PP loses to the plundering of public funds dubbed Cashgate but the Party has on several times blasted the claims.
