A cold war between Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has taken a new twist as MCP demands for the immediate firing of Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Patricia Kaliati.
MCP is accusing Kaliati of calling Dr. Lazarus Chakwera who is also leader of opposition as “village idiot” at a political rally held in Thyolo on Sunday which was graced by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.
In a news conference held on Wednesday in Lilongwe, MCP’s Publicity Secretary Jessie Kabwila expressed shock over Kaliati’s remarks, saying the remarks were unfortunate.
Kabwila said DPP should stop attacking the opposition and instead concentrate on development the country.
Reacting to the news in an interview with one of the local daily papers in the country [Nation Newspaper] Kaliati distanced herself from the remarks, saying there is no way she could utter such words against the MCP leader.
Kaliati warned MCP and Kabwila to stop dragging her into cheap dirty politics.
