OPPOSITION MPs CALL FOR THE RESIGNATION OF MUTHARIKA OVER MSB SALE

As debate continues over the sale of Malawi Savings Bank (MSB) by government, Opposition political parties in the country have called for the immediate resignation of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and Minister of Finance Goodall Gondwe, accusing the two of betraying parliament and Malawians.

Government has sold MSB to FDH holdings Limited owned by Thom Mpinganjira at MK9.5 billion and the signing ceremony took place at Capitol Hill on Thursday morning.

Just after the news broke out, opposition Members of Parliament reacted harshly on the move as others booed the Minister as he was stepping into the August House.

The first to speak on the matter was opposition People’s Party (PP) MP for Rumphi East, Kamlepo Kalua who expressed shock on the matter, saying the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) does not respect the role of parliament.

“Does Parliament have any powers in this case, are we failing as MPs, then I am calling for the resignation of President Peter Mutharika,” said Kamlepo.

On his part, PP leader in Parliament Uladi Mussa said the DPP government has failed Malawians and he asked Mutharika to voluntarily step down.

Concurring with Mussa, Leader of opposition Dr. Lazarus Chakwera said it is said that President Mutharika is making some decisions without hearing the cries of the electorate in the country and he vowed to do whatever he can to make sure that the truth on the matter is known.

Reacting to the move, Gondwe offered his head but was quick to say that the decision to sale the bank was the only way out, arguing that government needed K32 billion to keep MSB on its feet, a move he said was not feasible.

Meanwhile Civil Society Organisations in the country have threaten to go on the street over the sale of MSB.
