MOTA ENGIL DRAGGED TO COURT OVER LAND IN MACHINGA

Villagers in the Eastern District of Machinga have taken to court Mota Engil for not compensating them for a piece of land where a dry port is to be constructed at Liwonde.

The development comes barely months after Villagers in Mangochi also protested the construction of a world class hotel in the district, saying they were not consulted on the matter.

Speaking in an interview with one of the local media house in the country [ZBS], lawyer representing the people Nickson Masiku of Russell, Smith and Associates said the company has only managed to compensate them on houses and trees and not the land.

According to Masiku, the money given to the villagers as compensation is not enough for them to rebuild the structures they lost.

Information at hand indicates that they were given less than MK 100,000 (US$ 200) as compensation of structures which they lost.

Meanwhile High court in Zomba is today expected to make its ruling on the matter.
