The Lilongwe Senior Magistrate Court on Friday sentenced a 32-year-old woman to five years Imprisonment with hard labour for allegedly stealing a four-month old from its mother at Bwaila Hospital.
The court heard that the convict, Tiyanjane Khombe left Nathenje for Lilongwe, telling some close relatives that her time to deliver a baby was due.
However, on August 27 the suspect invaded the premises of Bwaila hospital posing as a ‘Good Samaritan’ and convinced the Jeniffer Duncan to let her keep her (Duncan’s) baby, Trevor, by the gate area until the she returned from seeing her hospitalised neighbour in the maternity section.
The suspect then escaped with the child and she was later apprehended in Nathenje.
During the hearing, Khombe pleaded guilty to the charge of child stealing, contrary to Section 167 of the Penal Code.
The development left senior resident magistrate Shyreen Yona with no option but to slap Khombe with 5 years jail sentence.
Khombe hails from Nkokamasa Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kaphuka in Dedza District.
