MCP DEMANDS INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATIONS TO THE FIRE THAT GUTTED MEC BALLOT PAPERS

Opposition Malawi congress Party (MCP) has trashed Malawi Police report on the fire that Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) warehouse in the capital Lilongwe destroying ballot papers for the disputed parliamentary election for Lilongwe Constituency.

Inspector General of Police Lexon Kachama on Friday told the press that interim reports indicates that the incident was accidental, ruling out arson as alleged by MCP.

But reacting to Kachama’s claims, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila said the Party is not surprised with the outcome of the report, saying the DPP government is doing whatever it can to suppress the outcome.

She said Party demands an independent investigation on the matter and come up with very independent results.

Kabwila said the MCP top brass would soon be meeting to make its stance clear on the investigation results that has taken the police one year to complete.

The May 20, 2014 tripartite election was marred by serious irregularities both during and before the polls and it took the intervention of the courts for the results to be released.
