FLOODS TO HIT NORTHERN REGION-WARNS GOVT

Government through Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development has warned people in the Northern part of Malawi to move to uplands areas, saying there is a likelihood of flooding in low lying flood prone areas, which include areas along lower reaches of Songwe, Lufilya. North Rukuru and Lweya rivers.

The warning follows the latest five-day weather forecast from the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, issued on 21st January, 2016.

The forecast indicates that heavy rains will persist over the northern part of the country during the next few days.

It is also reported that in the past few days the Northern Part of Malawi has received heavy rains unlike in the South and Central region.

The Ministry is, therefore, advising the general public and people living around and along these said rivers to be on guard and not drive or walk through flooded areas.

“People should be especially careful at night when it is nearly impossible to tell the depth of floodwaters,” reads the statement in part.
