MUTHARIKA FIRES WARNING SHOTS ON MALAWIANS AT FACEBOOK

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has expressed his displeasure over Malawians on Facebook and twitter for fabricating stories which are untrue.

Mutharika’s remarks follow a picture of his fall at Kamuzu Palace during tree planting exercise which went viral on the social media.

The picture raised speculations on the social media that Mutharika’s health is deteriorating and that State House has hired special doctors to treat the President at a cost of MK400 million but the rumour was rejected by Presidential Press Officer Gerald Viola.

Speaking on Saturday in Zomba during the consecration of Father Tambala as Bishop of Zomba diocese, Mutharika said Malawians cry for transformation but they resist change.

“This is a country in which someone can sit down and create a story that so and so has killed his wife, and spread the rumour on social media. I read this story about this young Blantyre banker in one of the papers. I feel sorry for this young man and the wife who was murdered by rumour. But where is our national integrity? Where is our love for one another?

“Where is our belief in the Truth? And because most of us don’t have the wisdom to question whatever we read on social media, worsened by our Malawian hunger for rumour, we have made facebook and Whatsapp our Bible,” said Mutharika.

Mutharika’s administration is fond of attacking the media and Zodiak Broadcasting Station [ZBS] is one of the victims.

Reporters from this station were once blocked from attending the media briefing at Kamuzu Palace in the capital Lilongwe without any reasons.
