Centre for Human Right and Rehabilitation (CHRR) Executive Director Timothy Mtambo has come out of his cocoon to condemn the recent beating of the suspected gay in the capital Lilongwe, saying the act is uncalled for.
On Monday, one of the human right defenders in the country Billy Mayaya posted pictures showing a man identified as Kelvin Gomani suspected to be a gay beaten severely by unknown people after disclosing his status.
The post attracted mixed reactions from Malawians with other applauding the group who administered mob justice on the suspect, saying homosexual is not allowed in the country.
But speaking in an interview with one of the local daily papers in the country, Mtambo denounced the act strongly and he attributed the mob justice to the statement said by opposition People’s Party (PP) Spokesperson Ken Msonda late last year, saying gays are worse than dogs and they should be killed.
Mtambo while urging the law to take it costs on the perpetrators, he wondered as to why the state discontinued Msonda’s case.
The court dropped the case after an application made by the state through Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mary Kachale.
When pressed to explain why the state dropped the case, Kachale said her office will soon issue a statement on the matter.
Meanwhile media reports indicate that Kachale has presented her statement on why the state dropped Msonda’s case to the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament.
