SDA WOMEN CLEAN UP LIMBE MARKET

In support of the ‘Keep Blantyre City Clean Initiative’ that promotes cleanliness in various places with the city, women from the Blantyre Seventh Day Adventist Church on Sunday swept Limbe market and the surrounding area.

The long day exercise saw women cleaning drains and removing garbage from unofficial dump sites.

Blantyre Seventh Day Adventist Chairperson, Mary Chimbalanga said the church believes that cleanliness is next to Godliness hence doing the charitable exercise of keeping the environment clean.

“We believe that good hygiene promotes health living and Limbe Market being an area where food stuffs are sold we thought of cleaning the place and its surrounding areas to promote sanitation of this place,” she said.

Chimbalanga then advised people to always keep the environment clean saying observing cleanliness should be an everyday business.

“Let us stop blaming Blantyre City Council for poor sanitation at the market and its surrounding areas rather we should be responsible enough in making sure that we dump our garbage at designated dump sites,” she said.

One of the market users, Ishmael Dzongwe thanked Women of the Blantyre Seventh Day Adventist for sweeping the area as the exercise ensured that Limbe Market looks clean.

Another market user who is a green vegetable seller, Mary Banda said it remains the responsibility of both the sellers and the buyers to maintain cleanliness of the area as one way of preventing health hazards.

Recently, people have been accusing the Blantyre City Council for its delays in refuse collection as well as failure to repair the vandalized sewer pipes that leak into Limbe River.

With keep the Blantyre city clean campaign championed by Blantyre City Council sanitation is slowly improving at the area.
