DRAMA IN PARLIAMENT AS MZOMERA NGWIRA DENIES A SEAT

There was drama in parliament on Tuesday as the expelled opposition People’s Party (PP) provincial chair for the north Christopher Mzomera Ngwira denied to take up his seat in the independent benches in the house.

On Monday, the Speaker of Parliament Richard Msowoya announced that PP Interim President Uladi Mussa wrote his office informing him of the firing of Mzomera Ngwira from the Party.

In the letter, Mussa asked the speaker to allocate Ngwira a seat in the Independent benches in the house which he did.

But dram ensued in the house on Tuesday when ground decided to seat on his former.

When quizzed by First Deputy Speaker Esther Mcheka Chilenje on why he has shunned his new seat, Ngwira said he has the right to take up any seat in the August House.

Despite Chilenje referring him to standing order 39 (1) which states that every member have a seat reserved for him or her by the speaker, Ngwira retaliated by quoting standing order 39 (5) which states that an Independent member can take up any seat in the chamber which has not been reserved for government MPs or opposition.

Ngwira was fired from PP for allegedly being behind the fracas that erupted in Mzuzu disrupting a meeting organized by Mussa and others.
