MICHAEL USI SAYS MUTHARIKA HAS FAILED MALAWIANS

As Malawians continue to experience the economic down turn coupled with hunger crisis, forcing citizens to be spending their nights at ADMARC deports in search for maize, well-known comedian Michael Usi has accused President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika of failing Malawians.

Usi’s remarks follow condemnation by Consumer Association of Malawi (CAMA) Executive Director John Kapito, accusing Mutharika to stop issuing threats instead of providing solutions to the hunger situation in the country.

Speaking in an interview with the press on Sunday, Usi who is also Executive Director of Adventist Relief Agency (ADRA) said Mutharika should accept the fact that he has failed to handle the hunger situation in the country.

Usi said time has come for Mutharika to appoint technocrats in his administration and not political pundits.

“Even in the Bible when Pharaoh in Egypt knew that he could no longer handle the food situation, he reached out to Joseph who was a Jew and not an Arab to help. Pharaoh humbled himself and it worked.

“We are not saying you should step down from your position, remain the President but let others help you. We cannot sit and watch [while] Malawians suffer. Government could be the germ causing this sickness,” Usi was quoted as saying.

Usi said from the look of this government has lost direction on how to handle the hunger situation and instead the President is just issuing threats.

“There is no clear strategy on how this government wants to deal with this hunger. Where is the Minister of Agriculture in all this?,” wondered Usi.

Usi also questioned Mutharika’s statement that ‘no Malawian will die of hunger’, saying this is not true at the moment.

Usi also advised the government to hasten in passing the Access to Information Bill.
