MRA INTERCEPTS A TRUCK CARRYING 357 BALES OF ZITENJE

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), on Thursday, 28th January 2016, intercepted a truck carrying 357 bales of Zitenje at Lirangwe Roadblock in Blantyre.

According to MRA’s Marketing Communications Manager, Wilma Chalulu, the bales belong to Xue Jue Xiang, a businessman based in Limbe.

“The trader declared the consignment as ladies waist garments with an intention to evade duty of K16.9 million. This is an offence of misdeclaration which is contrary to Section 135 of the Customs & Excise Act that is punishable under section 142 of the same Act,” said Chalulu.

MRA is warning all business people and the general public that misdeclaration, undervaluation or smuggling of goods is illegal and once caught offenders will be punished in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, all the 357 bales have been seized pending payment of the taxes due and a penalty.
