Police in Machinga have arrested a 20 year old Panganani Jafali for allegedly killing Roben Kamoyo, 94, who was working as a guard at Domasi Water Users Association Rice Mill at Mpheta in Machinga as District Labour Office deplored employment of old people.

Machinga Police head of investigation, Inspector Isaac Ndala confirmed the arrest of Jafalui who was in hiding since the alleged murder on February 19 at night.

Jafali killed the old guard before breaking into the rice mill where he allegedly stole a bag of rice.

The deceased was discovered dead in the morning on February 20th, according to Machinga police that intensified a search for the young man who was nowhere after the incident.

Medical Examinations at Chamba Health Center indicated that the old man died due to strangulation

According to Ndala members of the community recently tipped the police of Jafali’s whereabouts.

Jafali will answer murder charges contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code.

Kamoyo came from Namasalima village, Traditional Authority Kuntumanji in Zomba while Jafali comes from Muyaya village Traditional Authority Mposa in Machinga.

District Labour Office in Machinga has deplored employment of old people as security guards such as the late Kamoyo.

Labour officer, Chrissie Banda said people should stop employing old people above 60 years old as this is contrary to labour laws.

She however asked the relatives of the deceased to refer the matter to labour office for work compensation from his employer because he died on duty.
