MCP SPEAKS OUT ON MZUZU VIOLENCE: BLAMES THE POLICE FOR THE FRACAS

Opposition Malawi Congress party (MCP) has asked the Police to come on the open and explain to Malawians the reasons for not providing security at a joint rally held at Chibavi in Mzuzu where four MCP supporters were serious injured.

MCP together with opposition People’s Party (PP) and Alliance for Democracy (Aford) held a solidarity rally in Mzuzu on Sunday but the rally was marred by violence as armed thugs with machetes invaded the venue.

The thug stripped naked PP supporters and in the process they damaged a minibus belonging to MCP officials and personal aide to Dr. Lazarus Chakwera was also injured in the process.

Speaking in a media briefing on Monday, MCP Secretary General Gustav Kaliwo condemned the violence, saying Malawi is a peaceful country and such malpractice is not allowed.

“It was unfortunate that the police came at 17:30PM this was way after the rally had finished.

“Where is democracy in Malawi with what is happening, queried the MCP secretary general,” said Kaliwo.

On his party, MCP Spokesperson Jessie Kabwila accused the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of being behind the fracas.

“In the first place why the Police officers did came at the rally in time to protect the MCP members from the DPP thugs and yet MCP members are Malawians too,” said Kabwila.

Meanwhile CCJP has condemned the violence in the strongest terms, saying its threat to democracy.
