Northern region to receive more rains: Govt urges people to relocate

Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development has warned people of Karonga District of more rains which may result into serious and dangerous floods.

In a press statement, the ministry says it has received a report from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs DoDMA that the Northern Region especially Karonga District is expected to receive heavy rains for five consecutive days.

This, according to the statement signed by Sadram Maweru, Chief Director of Irrigation and Water Development in the ministry, is likely to cause rivers such as Songwe, North Rukuru and Lufilya to floods with expected damages to property and displacement of people.

”We would like to appeal to people along these rivers to be alert especially at night and if possible to vacate to uplands for fear of loss of life and properties,” leads part of the statement.

Contrary to other parts of the country, the northern region has received more than excessive rains that have seen over 6 people losing their lives and leaving thousands others displaced.

Meanwhile President Mutharika condoled the beareaved families and declared a State of National Disaster on 12th April 2016.

Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima and Information Minister Patricia Kaliati also visited the flood areas and cheered up the victims last week.
