Mutharika donates MK7 million to flood victims in Mzuzu

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has assured Mzuzu flood victims that his administration will continue to support them throughout their mourning period.

Professor Mutharika was speaking at Masasa in Mzuzu when he visited and condoled with people who lost their loved ones and property in the floods which took place March and April this year.

“I mourn with you all. I appreciate the challenges that you went through. I could not come when the accident happened,” he said.

“But am glad that the Vice President visited you and that other state agencies have been on the ground giving out the necessary assistance,” he added.

The President said he will liaise with the Vice President and the Ministry of Finance to allocate a piece of land for those whose houses were washed away by floods.

“We will look into the idea of finding new pieces of land where our friends can construct new and durable houses,” he added.

The Malawi leader also advised the people around Masasa area not to construct houses along river banks.

“We need to be careful with where we build our houses. River banks are dangerous places for accommodation.”

The vice president visited the flood victims earlier in April. President Mutharika has since given the victims K7 million to start up a new life.
