Deputy Speaker stops debate on albino killings in Parliament: opposition MPs not amused

Debate in Parliament was nearly disrupted in the National Assembly on Wednesday when Second Deputy Speaker Clement Chiwaya stopped debate on the ongoing killings, abductions and body exhuming of people living with albinism.

The whole issue started when some Members in the house got information of the brutal murder of a 38-year old albino person in Ntcheu who had its arms and legs chopped off.

The development prompted opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) member for Dedza Juliana Lunguzi to ask Deputy Speaker to suspend debate on the State of the Nation Address (SONA) by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and allow the house debate on the petition delivered by concerned citizen to the house over albino attacks in the country.

Lunguzi said that it’s better for the house to debate and find solutions on the attacks to people living with albinism.

She said the situation has reached a crisis stage and immediate solution is needed, attracting ululation from opposition benches.

But things went out of hand when Chiwaya blocked the debate on the matter, saying is under control at the moment.

The MPs from opposition were not amused with the stand, accusing him of siding with government.
