Mzuni student ‘cashgate’ updates: plundered money reduced to MK2.2 million from MK6.3 million

Information sourced by FaceofMalawi indicates that money believed to have been plundered by Mzuzu University (Mzuni) student has been reduced to K2.2 million from the initial reported figure of K6.3 million.

Dumisani Kagunga Kaunga, a third year student from Mzuni was arrested in December last year for allegedly defrauding the institution money amounting to MK6.3 million by creating 12 ghost students.

He opened an account for each student with different banks in Mzuzu where the treasury was depositing Mk40, 000 allowances every month.

But a new audit report has revealed that the student who was studying biomedical science at the University plundered only MK2.2 million through the said ghost students.

Mzuzu Public Relations Officer Martin Bwanali has confirmed of the development in an interview with the press.

The report has also faulted Mzuni’s registration procedure as well as the involved commercial banks’ account opening system.

Meanwhile Police have said they are ready to take Dumisani to court over the alleged crime.
