9 Mozambican nationals arrested in Nkhata-Bay for illegal entry

Police in Nkhata Bay District are keeping in custody nine people of Mozambican nationality for entering into Malawi without supporting documents.

Speaking in an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Sunday, Nkhata Bay Police Spokesperson, Sergeant Ignatius Esau, said the arrest of the accused followed a tip from good citizens.

“Following a tip from well-wishers on Saturday, a team of Police Officers stormed Kang’oma Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mankhambira where the nine Mozambicans were doing their fishing business,” he said.

He explained that during the operation it was discovered that the nine Mozambicans were aided to enter into Malawi by two Malawian men.

“Apart from arresting the nine Mozambicans, we also managed to arrest two Malawians, a 65 year old Jaja Kamanga and Andrew Kanyenda aged 43, for aiding these Mozambicans,” said Esau.

The Mozambican nationals are reported to have been doing business for the two Malawian men who aided them into Malawi.

The suspected illegal immigrants have since been arrested and will appear before the court of law to answer the charge of Illegal entry, which infringes on Section 21 of the Immigration Act.

On the other hand, Kamanga and Kanyenda will answer charges of aiding illegal immigrants.

Jaja Kamanga hails from Kang’oma Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mankhambira in Nkhata Bay while Andrew Kanyenda comes from Ngani Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mkumpha in Likoma District.
