Mutharika pardons 243 prisoners as part of Independence Day Celebrations

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has pardoned 243 prisoners as part of Republic Celebrations.

This has been disclosed in a press statement released from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security made available to FaceofMalawi.

“The prisoners who have been pardoned are those who have served at least half of their prison sentences, with good behavior and were not convicted of serious offences. Some prisoners have been considered for pardon because of their medical conditions.

“The Pardon of the 243 prisoners is a symbol of forgiveness during this Year’s Republic Celebrations,” reads in part the statement.

The constitution of the Republic of Malawi gives the President Powers to pardon prisons.
