Teachers across the country have today started a national wide strike following failure by government in implementing their grievances.
In March this year, TUM asked the government through Ministry of Education Science and Technology (MoEST) to promote teachers and raise their salaries.
The teachers planned to hold a national wide strike earlier last month but it was called off due to a promise by government that the issue will be addressed.
Since then government has been playing a delay darling tactics on the matter until today.
Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) President Denis Kalekeni confirmed of the strike in an interview with the press.
Kalekeni said teachers are not happy with the new timetable that the government has introduced with consulting them and the delay in promoting them.
He said the strike will go on until their demands are met by government.
Information from Nsanje indicates that the strike has started while in Mzuzu teachers are waiting for official communication from TUM.
Meanwhile Ministry of Education expressed ignorance when asked for comment on the strike.
