Mutharika frustrates CSOs demonstrations against fee hike: To meet UNIMA Students Union Leaders

There are uncertainties surrounding the planned demonstrations by Civil Society Organization against fee hike in all constituencies of the University of Malawi (UNIMA) as President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has accepted to meet students union leaders.

University of Malawi Student Union (UMSU) on Monday wrote Mutharika seeking audience with him on fee hike saga as University of Malawi Chancellor.

In statement released to the press from the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) signed by Mgeme Kalilani, Mutharika will meet the students’ union leader on August 4 2016 the same day CSOs are set to hold demonstrations against the fee hike.

“The President has accepted to meet the student unions leaders and it hassince pleased him to grant them audience on 4th August 2016 at Kamuzu Palace in Kamuzu Palace at 1 0:00 hrs,” reads in part the statement.

Meanwhile some quarters have described the move by Mutharika as one way of frustrating CSOs right to demonstrate.
