Mchinji West by-elections scheduled for October called off

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced the postponement of by-elections which were scheduled for October in Mchinji.

Making the announcement, Chairperson for the Electoral Services Committee for MEC Commissioner Jean Namathanga said the decision has been arrived at because Treasury has not released funds due to alleged mismanagement of funds at the commission.

Ministry of Finance spokesperson Nations Msowoya confirmed of the development in an interview with the press.

Msowoya said the treasury will release the funds only if the electoral body meets the requirement that the Ministry is demanding.

Meanwhile, the commission is assuring all stakeholders that the postponement is just for a couple of days and that all preparations should continue.
