Blantyre International University (BIU) has asked government to accredit on Law progarmme so that its graduates can be able to practice law in Malawi.
Professor Charles Chanthunya said this during the fifth graduation for the awarding of Bachelor’s Degrees in Blantyre.
He said that the President said that all students who have Law Degrees from other colleges apart from Chancellor College should be allowed to practice law in this country.
“We hope that government will accredit us so that our students should be able to practice Law in this country. Currently we have many of our students that are working both in government and the private sector but they cannot be able to represent a client in court because we are not accredited,” he said.
Currently only students who graduated from Chancellor College are allowed to practice Law in Malawi.
Asked if they are facing competition with other Universities Professor Chanthunya said there is no any competition because the number of students that qualify for University education is 70,000 and only seven thousand are taken by the public Universities which means that the rest have nowhere to go.
He also said that most of their students are taken by other Universities outside because they have qualified lectures with PH D degrees.
The University started with 30 students in 2008 now has over 2,000 students.
