Govt cancels maize purchase from Ukraine

Information sourced by FaceofMalawi indicates that government has cancelled its plans to purchase maize from Ukraine.

Ministry of Finance spokesperson Nations Msowoya confirmed of the development in an interview with faceofMalawi reporter.

Msowoya said the deal was marred by serious irregularities.

Malawians expressed surprise and concern from the word go that the government was using middlemen to look for maize as far as Ukraine, saying this smacked of corruption and bribery.

Over 5 million Malawians across the country are expected to be hit by hunger this year due to drought.
