Murdered albino remains exhumed for reburial in Dedza

Police on Tuesday exhumed the remains of 20-year old woman with albinism who was brutally murdered in April in Ntchisi.

The police carried out the exercise upon the deceased’s family request to have the remains reburied at her home village in Dedza.

Speaking with Malawi News Agency (Mana) at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) where the remains were taken to en-route to Dedza, Lucia Samalani, the village head of where the deceased, Eneless Nkhata, hailed from, alleged that the young woman was killed by her father’s young brother, Gerald Phiri.

Samalani said Phiri had taken Eneless from the village on the pretext of having found a job for her in Ntchisi where a few days later the young woman was found dead with all her limbs missing.

“We are very saddened with the loss of Eneless; she was very kind and friendly to everyone,” said Samalani, who said they had wanted to have Nkhata’s remains accorded decent burial in her village.

Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Malison Ndau, welcomed the remains of Nkhata at KCH accompanied by some officials from his Ministry, President for Association for People with Albinism (APAM), Boniface Massi, and some APAM members.

Ndau expressed shock over the way Nkhata was killed and he said government would do everything it can to ensure that the rights of people with albinism are protected just like everybody’s.

Deputy Inspector General responsible for operations, Rodney Jose, disclosed that about seven suspects including Phiri were under custody in relation to Nkhata’s murder. He said the police would not relent in the fight against such barbaric acts and he further appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious acts in their community.

Reburial of Nkhata is expected to take place at Mtamba Village, Traditional Authority Kaphuka in Dedza district.
